Rumor
is the most primitive way of spreading stories - by passing them on from mouth
to mouth. But civilized countries in normal times have newspapers. In times of
stress and confusion, however, rumor emerges and becomes widespread. At such
times the different kinds of news are in competition: the press, television,
and radio against the rumor.
Rumors do spread when war requires
keeping secret on many important matters. The usual news sources no longer give
out satisfactory information, resulting in people not getting the necessary
information. When this happens, then rumors develop.
Rumors are often repeated even by
those who do not believe the tales. There is a fascination about them. The
reason is that the clearly designed rumor gives expression to something deep in
the hearts of the victims - the fears, suspicions, forbidden hopes, or
daydreams which they hesitate to voice directly. Pessimistic rumors about
defeat and disasters show that the people who repeat them are worried and
anxious. Optimistic rumors about record breaking sports or forthcoming peace,
lead to complacency(满足) or
confidence - and often to overconfidence.

Elderly
people respond best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always
easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get
excited or upset then they may become more difficult to look after. Although
sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to
get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as
possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.
Failing memory makes it difficult for
the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted.
The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is
missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every
opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and
straightforward.
"Good morning, Mum. This is Fiona,
your daughter. It is eight o'clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast
downstairs."
When the elderly person makes confused
statements,e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead
relative, correct in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: "You don't work in the
office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the
dishes?"
We rely heavily on the information
provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to
organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the
time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards
or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different
cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos,
scrap books, and addresses or shopping list could help in individual case.
56. Why can't we always keep calm in front of old people?

Many
countries face a somewhat more serious economic problem in the form of an
unfavorable trade balance with other nations. Such an imbalance exists when the
total value of a country's imports exceeds that of its exports. For example, if
a country buys $25 billion of products from other countries, yet sells only $10
billion of its own products overseas, its trade deficit(贸易逆差) is $15 billion. Many
underdeveloped nations find themselves in this position because they lack
natural resources or the industrial capacity to use these resources, and thus
have to import raw materials or manufactured goods.
One effect of a trade deficit is the
flow of currency out of a country. In the case of an underdeveloped nation,
this can cause many financial difficulties, including failure to meet debt
payments and obstacles to creation of an industrial base. Even in the case of a
fully developed nation such as the United States, a large trade deficit is a
reason for alarm. American products, made by well-paid workers in U.S.
industries, cost more to produce than those made in places like Asia, where
labor and material costs are much lower. Money spent on foreign products is
money not spent on items produced by domestic industries.
61. What does the passage mainly discuss?

B. The cause and consequences of trade deficit.
C. Lack of resources in underdeveloped countries.
D. High labor and material costs in developed countries.
答案:B
62. According to the passage, a trade imbalance occurs when ______.

答案:B
63. Many underdeveloped countries have trade deficits because ______.

B. they export most of their natural resources to other countries
C. they borrow too much money from other countries
D. they have to import most of their manufactured products

64. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible cause of a trade imbalance?
A. The flow of currency of the country.
B. Low labor and material costs in Asian countries.
C. Lack of natural resources.

答案:A
65. It can be inferred from this passage that American industries ______.

Robert
Spring, a 19th century forger(造假者),
was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years
by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in
1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At fist he
prospered by selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs.
Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures
of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and writing them on the title pages
of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to
England and Canada for sale and circulation.
Forgers have a hard time selling their
products. A forger can't approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people
who don't have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make
their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of
the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.
In Spring's time, right after the
Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a
respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of
General "Stonewall" Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny Jackson's
financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts
belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the
demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving
sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the
originals.
66. In Philadelphia Spring first made a lot of money by ______.

C. selling the genuine signatures of some famous Americans
D. selling his forgeries to other countries

答案:B
68. According to paragraph 2, forgeries are usually sold to ______.

B. an imaginary person created by Spring

70. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______.
A. Spring's business began to go downhill after the Civil War
B. Miss Fanny Jackson had serious financial problems
C. Spring was short of money when his life came to an end
D. Spring's forging skills did not improve much before his death

Regular
child care provided outside home or by someone other than the mother does not
in itself undermine healthy emotional connections between mothers and their
15-month-old infants, according to a long-term national study. The finding
holds even if care begins during the first 3 months after birth and runs for 30
hours or more per week.
Among infants who receive unkind and
unresponsive care from their mothers, however, the mother-child relationship
may be damaged. "This research helps us put apart complexities regarding
child care that have not previously been studied in detail," contends Jay
Belsky, a psychologist.
The investigation consists of 1,153 children
and their families living in or near Boston. The youngsters, no more than 1
month old when they entered the study in 1991, will be tracked until the age of
7. Experimenters administered questionnaires to mothers in their homes and
videotaped baby caretakers interacting with the kids at ages 1, 6 and 15
months. Independent observers rated the quality of each child care efforts and
noted infant nervousness. Unlike most previous studies, this one allows
researchers to observe each caretaker's personality at child nursing, and kids'
emotional reactions by the equipment.
71. From the first paragraph we know that ______.
A. mother care is the best according to a national study
B. child care outside home is the best in accordance with the study
C. regular child care outside home may play a role as a mother
D. connections between mothers and infants are damaged by outside care

答案:B
74. The main difference between the investigation and the previous ones is that ______.
A. the researchers started with only one month old infants
B. the observers could rate the quality of child care efforts and analyzed them soon
C. the researchers were able to give the questionnaires to mothers in their homes
D. video equipment enabled researchers to observe what was happening directly
答案:D
75. Which of the following is NOT TRUE of the investigation?
A. It will last at least 7 years.
B. Cooperation from the mothers is also necessary.
C. Some independent observers play a part.
D. Researchers paid site visits to see a caretaker's personality and kids' emotional reactions.
