大学英语A4

一、阅读理解

During Paleolithic(旧石器)times man became man by learning to speak, to make tools and to use fire. This gave him an enormous advantage over other animals about him. Yet in one fundamental respect he remained alike to them. He was still a hunter among other hunters. He was still a food gatherer as were countless other species that were completely dependent on the bounty (恩赐)of nature. And being dependent on the nature, he was dominated by nature. He had to be constantly on the move in order to follow animals and to locate fishing grounds. He had to live in small groups because not many could find enough food to support themselves in a given area if he lived alone. It is estimated that even in fertile areas with a mild winter, only one or two food collectors could support themselves per square mile. And twenty or even thirty square miles were needed for each human soul in regions of cold climate, tropical jungle or desert.

Such dependence on nature left its mark on all aspects of human society. But this dependence was greatly reduced when man made the epochal(纪元的)discovery that he could feed himself by growing his food as well as by gathering it. In doing so a new world with a bright future opened before him, as he left behind him the Paleolithic stage of his development and entered the Neolithic(新石器).

Throughout the colonial period there was a remarkable shortage of women, which varied with the regions and was always greatest in the frontier areas. This shortage enhanced 提高women's status and position and allowed them to pursue different careers. The puritans 清教徒 regarded idleness as a sin 罪恶, and believed that life in an underdevelopment country made it necessary that each member of the community performed an economic function. Thus work for women was not only approved but also was regarded as a civic 公民的 duty. Puritan town councils expected widows and independent women to be self-supporting. There was no social prohibition against married women working; on the contrary, wives were expected to help their husbands in their trade and won social approval for doing extra work in or out of the home.

The vast majority of women worked within their homes, where their labor produced most articles needed for the family. The entire colonial production of cloth and clothing and partly that of shoes was in the hands of women. In addition to these occupations, women were found in many different kinds of employment. They were butchers, silversmiths and gunsmiths. They ran mills, plantations, shipyards, and every kind of shop. They were gatekeepers, jail keepers, journalists, printers, nurses, and teachers.
