大学英语A3

一、阅读理解

We do love our children, but what they can do to our marriages is another story. A recent review found that marriage satisfaction dropped 42% after the first baby. The shift from lovers to parents can rock your marriage down to its roots. That's why we're here to help.

First, don't blame yourselves on mistakes you made. Experts say the first baby is the biggest challenge your marriage will ever face. You're both lack of experience, so it's no big deal if each of you makes any mistake. Don't feel guilty or personally responsible for the mistakes and don't blame your spouse (配偶). You're only responsible if you don't do anything to fix them up.

Second, talk about your frustrations (沮丧) and fatigue. You must know that kisses and hugs are not all for caring for your little one; feeding, changing, bathing and entertaining your baby make you feel exhausted physically and mentally. You should find time to talk together about your frustrations, fatigue, and even moments of anger. These feelings are normal - not a sign that you're a bad parent. Accepting each other's feelings can even keep you feeling closer.

Third, be frank about the losses as well as the gains. New parents often worried silently and separately about all the ways a new baby has changed their lives, creating marriage distance. A new dad may feel that the new baby has taken his place as number one in his wife's affection. A new mom may feel sad about the ways pregnancy, nursing, and the demands of child care have changed her body. These feelings are normal too. Sharing them will help you feel better.

Finally, take part in groups for new parents. If you compare notes with other new parents, you can be provided with emotional support. You will also have a sense of sure that, no matter how busy things are, it's just part of life. You'll be far less likely to blame your marriage and much more likely to find solutions - and feel good about what you're doing together.

Halloween (October 31) is a holiday widely celebrated with different names in many countries. Although it originated as a religious holiday, it has lost its religious connections in the United States. It is now celebrated largely as a children's day, and many American children look forward to it for days and weeks beforehand.

The orange pumpkin is harvested at this time of year and is hollowed out, a funny face cut into it, and a candle placed inside as decorations in the window. City folks, nowadays, sometimes use paper pumpkins for decorations. Some years ago, the holiday was celebrated by dressing up in strange and frightening costumes and playing tricks on one's neighbors and friends, such as ringing door bells, throwing bits of corn on the window panes, and in other ways making minor disturbances. More recently, children come to the door to have friends and neighbors admire their costumes and guess who they are behind the false faces and receive treats of candy, fruit or cookies. They say, "Trick or Treat", meaning "I will play a trick on you if you do not give me a treat."

This practice has even more recently developed into a significant international activity. Instead of or along with candy, the children collect money for UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). This special collection of money by children for needy children throughout the world is known as "UNICEF Trick or Treat". Begun only recently, it results in several million dollars each year contributed to UNICEF. The collection box is orange, reminiscent of the pumpkin.
