Americans this year will swallow 15, 000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. As the most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂) were available in the United States. For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On the other hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.序号:8_1

Interact use appears to cause a drop in psychological (心理的) health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless“virtual”(虚的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology, it' s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors (发起人). “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

Some people seem to have a knack for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language ##1## more quickly than other people. They do not seem to be any cleverer than others. What makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few ##2## which make language learning easier for them.Firstly, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they'd ##3## discover their own way to learn the language than wait for the teacher to explain everything. They try to find the sentence patterns, the rules and the meaning of the new word by themselves. They are good guessers. They look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.##4## , successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them whenever they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is ##5## or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know every word's meaning.序号:10_1
