Installing a whole-house air purification system is one way to keep indoor air clean and circulating.
Going “green” doesn't have to be a challenge. A home is a long-term investment. You don't have to start over from cratch. Make small changes. Choose environmentally friendly paint or LED bulbs.

In 1909 an English newspaper offered £ 1,000 to the first man to fly across the English Channel in an aeroplane. Today, modern jets cross it in minutes. But at that time it still seemed a good distance. The race to win the money soon became a race between two men. Both were very colorful.
One was Louis Bleriot. He owned a factory in France that made motor car lamps. He was already well known as a pilot because he had had accidents several times. Some people laughed at him. One man said, “He may not be the first to fly across the Channel but he will certainly be the first to die in an accident!” But Bleriot was really a good and brave pilot. He also had many good ideas about aeroplane design.
The other man was Hubert Latham. He was half French and half English. He took up flying when his doctors told him he had only a year to live. “Oh, well,” he said, “if I'm going to die soon, I think I shall have a dangerous and interesting life now.”
Latham was the first to try the flight across the Channel. Ten kilometres from the French coast, his plane had some trouble. It fell down into the water and began to sink under the water. A boat reached Latham just in time. He was sitting calmly on the wing and was coolly lighting a cigarette. Bleriot took off six days later. He flew into some very bad weather and very low cloud. He somehow got to the English side and landed in a farmer's field. When he did so, a customs (海关) officer rushed up to his plane. Planes have changed since then, but customs officers have not. “Have you anything to declare?” The officer demanded.

A. To ask if Beriot had anything to declare.
B. To make sure that the pilot was not hurt.

Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two—thirds of the world's population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many of man's needs.
The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor ready to be mined (开采).
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents (水流) and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2000 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.

A. fish and oil
B. warm temperature and ocean currents
C. the food, energy sources, and minerals
2. The sea serves the needs of man because .
A. in provides man with food
B. it supplies man with minerals

In 1933, an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney's cartoon(动画片) film for children. When Walt Disney heard Nash's voice, he said “Stop! That's our duck!”
The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat(水上住家) and wore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was lazy and greedy(贪婪的), and because he lost his temper(发脾气) very quickly . And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews(侄子). Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody like Mickey.
In the 1930s, 40s and 50s Donald and hid friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared---there were no more new cartoons.
Clarence Nash died in February, 1985. But today's children can still see the old cartoons on television and hear that famous voice.

Lynne Shaner used the Internet to buy everything she needed for her wedding and holiday gifts for her husband and step-daughter. Other than food, 90 percent of her purchases are made on the computer in her Washington apartment.
“I find that, by being able to go online and choose the things that I need to choose, and have them delivered to me right at my doorstep, I eliminate all the driving, all the crowds, all the noise of that, and I usually get a better selection,” Shaner explained.
Analysts say US online shopping has hit records in November and December. Fifty-seven percent of Americans have made at least one online purchase. Traditional merchants worry that the growing e-commerce will shrink their share of the market. Cornell University Marketing Professor Ed McLaughlin says they have reason for concern.
“Anything that can move online will go. It is just a matter of time,” he stated. McLaughlin says traditional stores can keep their customers by offering goods like clothing, which customers may want to see and try on before purchasing — as well as items that are difficult to ship. He says some bricks and mortar stores are also pleasing customers with services that set up or repair computers and electronics. Traditional stores also offer a social experience that some shoppers enjoy.
“Oftentimes, you need that last sense of ‘this is exactly what I want’ before you part with your money,” he said. “And you can’t always get that online. It’s a rather cold process. Traditional stores can also deliver goods more quickly than online retailers,” Martin says. And smart merchants are using stores to guide customers to websites and using their websites to encourage customers to visit their stores.
While e-commerce worries some merchants, it’s a huge boost for delivery services like FedEx and UPS. UPS Manager Dana Kline says e-commerce means her company is even busier than usual this time of year. “We are expecting 28 million pieces on their peak day, which is December 20, which is up about a million from last year,” she noted. UPS is so busy that it’s hiring 55,000 temporary workers during the holiday season to deliver gifts. Those packages are headed for homes, including Lynne Shaner’s purchase.

Television has become such a major part of life that many American parents use it as a babysitter. A new study shows that almost one-third of families have TVs in children’s bedrooms, and the number of television programs geared toward infants is growing.
Katie Weaver has her hands full. Four children in her kitchen, and two of them are hers. All of them are under the age of six, and thirsty at the same time. It’s enough to get on the nerves of any adult. Like many of the 1,000 parents surveyed in a Kaiser Family Foundation study, Katie admits she sometimes uses TV as a pacifier when her children are overly excited and it usually works.
“I don’t use it as a babysitter because they don’t watch enough or long enough for that, but if they are very hyped up, sometimes I’ll use TV to calm them down,” she said. While there has been some concern that watching too much television fosters obesity in children, the long-term effects of parking a very young child in front of the “tube” are not clear.
“A lot of them are two-parent working families, so we’re talking about having very little time with the children. If that time is used in front of a screen, rather than interactively, it’s compromising the way these children are learning to pay attention, the way they’re learning to problem-solve, and most importantly, the way they’re learning to think and use language,” said Greenspan, who is the expert of the Kaiser Family Foundation study.
In the survey, parents of children much younger, up to a year old, report viewing averages of an hour per day. For kids one to two years, it’s close to an hour and a half. Greenspan believes babies and children under the age of two should not be watching at all and he’s worried that some parents are concealing the real truth. “If anything, it’s an underestimation, because if a kid’s watching two hours, they might say an hour. So I think what we’re getting is a minimal estimate,” he said.
Television programming for very young children has been increasing. Yet one researcher involved in the Kaiser study says there is still no evidence that children up to the age of two learn anything of value from television.

The Belgian city of Ghent has declared Thursdays meat-free days. Should cities around the world join in the vegolution?
By encouraging people to eat no meat one day a week, Ghent hopes to improve public health and reduce our impact on the environment. In fact, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): “The livestock sector has become one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems.”
And if the idea can be accepted among people, the impact will be enormous. If everyone in Flanders (population: six million) does not eat meat one day a week, it will save as much CO2 in a year as taking half a million cars off the road. Imagine if every city in the world followed suit!
So even though I ate out in Brussels yesterday, I chose a veggie meal. Don’t get me wrong. I’m by no means vegetarian. In fact, I love flesh very much. But for the past couple of years, my wife and I have changed our diet and try to eat meat or fish only a couple of times a week. After a period of adjustment, we both feel healthier.
“There has been a great increase in demand for vegetarian dishes at my restaurant over the past few years,” a Ghent restaurant said. “The selection of vegetarian dishes we offer has also grown considerably.” He adds that his clients are eating veggie mainly for their own well-being, and then, the environment.
The idea has been picked up by media around the world and captured the attention of ordinary people. One meatless day a week is a great idea, and no loss for those who want a tasty diet. Let the vegolution begin!
1.What does the word “vegolution” mean?
A.There is a meatless day in a week.
B.A revolution of cooking daily vegetables.
C.A recommendation to eat vegetables everyday.
2.The following statements are the reasons of recommending Vegolution except for ______.
A.Vegolution is good for people’s health.
B.Vegolution helps to reduce green house gas.
C.Vegolution contributes to the development of the livestock sector.
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Ghent encourages her residents to eat meat freely on Thursday.
B.The stock breeding is one of the leading factors of environmental problems.
C.For the flesh-lovers, they couldn't accept the veggies for they are not tasty enough.
4.By citing the words of a Ghent restaurant, the authors would like to show that ________.
A.More and more people are willing to change their diet to become vegetarians.
B.Ghent restaurants offer the selection of vegetarian dishes for they have to obey the official instruction.
C.Ghent people realizes that eating vegetables could do favor to not only themselves but also the environment.
5.According to the passage, the author’s attitude to Vegolution is _______.
A.Positive
B.Negative
C.Ambiguous

It is very necessary to make your house look greener because it has a direct impact on your health. If you keep your house greener, you will get rid of many dangerous diseases. Here are some ways to keep it greener.
1. Good and reliable Interior
Indoor material, like windows, doors, cupboards, etc.?must be of good quality. These things play an important role to clean the house. Doors and cupboards must be of high quality wood. Aluminium windows must be used. You must use high-quality paints for walls, doors, windows and cupboards.
2. Using wider windows and doors for ventilation.
Oxygen is a necessary element to enable you to live alive. For healthy life, windows and doors must be wide and usually be kept open at least for 15 hours a day, as ventilation of air makes you fresh and healthy.
3. Placing plants especially flowers at various places
No one wants an empty house, and plants definitely play a refreshing role. First, the plants provide you with oxygen necessary for survival. Second, plants and especially flowers spread heart-attracting fragrance. All unhealthy odors are eradicated from your home and you feel fresh whenever you are inside it. Flowers also make your home interior look more appealing.

5.Using anti-bacterial materials for washing floors and contents.
Usually unclean fans, floors and walls breed bacteria and viruses, which are then carried by flies and mosquitoes. These carriers then infect the humans by contact through contaminated food or direct attacks on human body.
